I found a few places that I liked (one of which closed down), but as I gravitated more towards an egg and dairy free diet, I was left with no where to turn but my own kitchen for a good vegan crepe. While the ones I make at home are delish, it's just not the same as batter that's been fanned oh so thin on that beautiful round machine.
When I read on Eater LA that a vegan creperie was opening in Beverly Hills and that it was owned by a true French couple, I was thrilled! I knew this would not be one of those mall knock-offs serving flavorless flat dough trying to disguise itself as crepes. This would be the real deal.
I got myself over to LA Vegan Crepe as soon as I could to give them a try and I will definitely be returning soon!
My friend joined me for lunch and we were both tempted by the veggie lovers (a savory buckwheat crepe with spinach, onion, mushroom, tomato, bell pepper, broccoli, cheddar). I ordered mine with a few modifications, which the staff was happy to accommodate (no tomato, no bell pepper, no Daiya, sub pesto). We were delivered a decent sized crepe served with a fairly large side salad; and this wasn't a meager salad of limp lettuce, it was chock full fresh veggies, including spinach, broccoli, and mushrooms.
The crepe was delicious! Even without the salad, which I ate a few bites of (I'm not a big salad person and don't eat much in the way of raw veggies) my lunch was extremely filling. I was eager to try one of their dessert crepes, but I was just too full, between the crepe and the hot chocolate I'd ordered. Reason to come back!Everything was much smoother than I had expected going in to a restaurant that has only been open for a little over a week. Our server was clearly still learning her way around the menu, but was very attentive and trying her best. She made sure to repeat everything we ordered, and also immediately asked the kitchen staff when she didn't have an answer about ingredients or availability of items, getting us the correct info right away, rather than just make something up. This is detail that I appreciate as someone with dietary restrictions.
The atmosphere is a little lacking, but cute enough. There are a couple of couches at the front of the cafe which, to me, give the impression of being an invitation to stay a while. There was a woman sitting with her laptop at one of the small table, which added to the cozy stay here a while feel. However, I'm not sure if the restaurant has wifi to encourage customers to stick around for a bit.
When I drove up, I noticed a sign that said "Parking in Rear" but when I went around the alley behind I couldn't find anything that looked like parking for the restaurant. Street parking in the afternoon was easy enough, although meters do cost $2.00 per hour so be prepared with lots of change, or use your credit card.
LA Vegan Crepe is what's been missing in my crepe loving life. What would make it even greater is if they are able to offer a gluten-free version of their crepe, as I was informed that the batter does have a small amount of wheat flour. Perhaps in time. I have faith they'll be sticking around for a while!
